“I was just wondering the other day about why a patient accepts reiki from another person, but not from whatever source this energy is from directly. Does the belief in the healer have anything to do with that? Or does the reiki simply permeate even the most resistant of people?” - Dave

These are great questions and ones that comes up regularly. I’ll begin by first saying that healers are not actually the ones doing the healing, but facilitating the healing. We act as a conduit, so to speak, for the Universal Life Energy to flow through from Source to the client. All healing depends on the willingness of the client to take responsibility for their own health and well being and move through the issues that cause imbalance and disharmony within us – body, mind and spirit. Reiki works to release the blockages in our energy systems to create a steady flow of energy throughout, nourishing our physical body, as well as our emotional, mental & spiritual bodies. These “healings” are often important lessons that, when learned, allow us to progress, relieving us of pain and suffering. So the client is actually receiving the energy directly from Source. Reiki is a healing energy that flows to where it is needed most, without the presence of the practitioner’s personality/ego, for the client’s highest best. I would definitely suggest that you work with a practitioner that you feel is working with pure intentions for your personal highest best. Regarding resistant people, I believe that whoever is directed to me for assistance on their healing path, may be more open than they appear. I suggest that we stay open to the unlimited possibilities and know that everyone is equally qualified for miracles.

How did you decide to get into Reiki? - (from C.A.I., Howard County, MD)

A few years ago, in the midst of a rather stressful time, I found myself experiencing health issues that 5 different doctors/specialists could not diagnose – no cause, no cure. They tested me for every imaginable disease/disorder with no success. They treated me for things I didn’t have in hopes of finding something to provide some relief from the sometimes unbearable pain and discomfort. They dismissed me and suggested that I go online and Google “Behchet’s Disease”. I did and found that they don’t know what it is, how you get it, there is no way to diagnose it, and no treatment for it. I could self-diagnose by going down a checklist; if I had 5 or more of the 9 symptoms, I may have it. This was very discouraging. It lasted for one and a half years.

Toward the end of this one and a half year period, I had noticed that I was becoming particularly sensitive to others feelings, to the point that, when someone near me was feeling emotional pain or despair, I was having an involuntary response to it with the same level of sadness, as if it was directly related to me. This, too, was very uncomfortable. One day while in a meeting, the sadness became overwhelming and I needed to leave. This wasn’t the first time this had happened, but this particular day a friend followed me out and asked if I was okay. I began to open up for the first time about the empathic experiences I was having. She told me she knew someone that may be able to help me. She said she was a master astrologist and energy healer and I might want to consider having her do a birth chart reading for me. I wasn’t sure how she might be able to help me, but felt compelled to give it a try after many other attempts to feel better. Three weeks later, I met my first Reiki Master and still today, spiritual advisor, Ellen Potter. She assured me I didn’t have Behchet’s Disease but was experiencing an imbalance. She instructed me to take some supplements to help balance my pH and said I might want to consider taking a Level 1 Reiki class she was giving. I had heard the word “Reiki” about 5 years prior but never questioned what it was and never thought about it again. She told me that level one Reiki is about self-healing and she was pretty sure it would benefit my health issues. A few weeks later, I found myself in my first Reiki class. At the end of the class, Ellen strongly suggested that we do (at least) 21 consecutive days of self-treatment to assist with the integration of the Reiki energy. After only one 1 week, I began experiencing a profound healing of this dis-ease that was determined to be incurable by western medicine. Within 2 weeks, I was free of the symptoms and the pain and have been free ever since. I thought, maybe there’s something to this Reiki .….. I felt guided to continue my training in Reiki Level 2. A year later I received a clear knowing that I was not only to practice, but to teach and have since received certifications as Usui Reiki Master and Karuna Reiki® Master. Although I have training in other modalities, the foundation of my practice always comes back to Reiki, a gentle, yet powerful healing energy based on Divine Love & Wisdom.

Today I live gratefully for the place that my pain has taken me.

What are the immediate and long-term benefits of Reiki?

While there are many benefits of Reiki, some immediate benefits include deep relaxation and stress reduction.  The benefits to being in a state of deep relaxation go beyond the feeling of bliss.  Our bodies are most receptive to healing (on all levels) while we are in a state of relaxation.

Regarding the long term benefits, Reiki releases blocks that cause disruption in the flow of our life force energy.  When our energy centers, the Chakras, are in need of clearing, balancing and realignment, our life force energy becomes deficient and this compromises our well-being.  Regular Reiki treatments assist us in achieving and maintaining optimal health and promoting total well-being - body, mind & spirit.
